If you think THAT story is crazy, check this out... how the Feds seized an underground hip-hop site, effectively censoring it for a year, for "illegally" distributing content that labels and artists had authorized it to share.

I want games to try different things. By their nature, games are challenging. But I'd like to see the challenge presented in ways that do not rely (for whatever reasons) on gameplay conventions adopted from a bygone era. We have some serious unlearning to do. And by "we" I mean game developers.

I think as we move progressively into online, multiplayer experiences we'll begin to see new ways of being challenged. And indeed new ways games are presented to us.

So...you want a game that doesn't present much of a challenge? I agree that getting stuck at a boss sucks, and maybe developers should give you a "skip" option once you fail a few times, but the point of dying in a game is to challenge you to see what you did wrong and how to avoid death. Plus, if there were no way to die while being shot at, it would really make the game unbelievable. Also, what game these days has lives and a continue option??? You can typically die an infinite amount of times. Retail games, I mean, I know they still have that in some downloadable titles...

This is the troof.

By breaking down the games into tiny chunks (lives / levels / continues) designers are limiting how immersive the gaming experience can be. I love platformers, but that old 8-level paradigm don't fly today.

An example of doing it right: Super Meat Boy twists the idea of dying by encouraging it, as the player gets an endless supply of Meats. Dying happens often -- it's necessary to discover the fastest path through each level -- and when the level is completed the payoff is a replay of all your attempts, superimposed onto each other into a scene of bloody carnage.

I agree with losing the health bar, but it's something that really bothered me at first (in Halo, then Ghostbusters). We've been so trained to instantly recognize the heads-up display that it's almost shocking when that data disappears.

I think that as console games become more immersive the idea of dying will slowly filter out. When players are physically involved with the game, the DEATH of you, the character… gets kinda uncomfortable.

Then again, maybe it's time for ENTER THE VOID: The Game…
